PART 1 on our discussion of boredom!

Boredom boredom boredom, listening to Tyler the Creator while watching Netflix, while doing a puzzle, while painting your toenails- we've all been there.
And quite frankly some of you are probably right there now, and to let you in on a little secret, I painted my toes too while editing this ep xx.

Is boredom something that we should be villainising, or is it just a little warning signal from our body to re-prioritise our attention and our meaning?

Todays episode is a little more 'woo woo'  and by woo woo I mean based in the science of psychology which relies on slightly more interpretable data aka that being peoples opinions, perceptions, interactions. This doesn’t make it any less rooted in fact or in science, and in fact it probably is more robust because of the scrutiny that this type of science is often subjected to.

Please enjoy our discussions and philosophising and let us know if you too think that boredom is a natural, and while maybe not celebrated, a more neutral emotion than everyone would lead us to believe. And maybe If we allowed ourselves to fully feel bored we would gain monumental insight into our own motivations and desires and this could lead us towards a more meaningful and intention life. But who knows that’s just my hypothesis on the matter...

Stay hot science xx

TRIGGER WARNING: we discuss depression and suicide in this episode (from a statistically and analytical perspective) If this raises issues with you please reach out to Lifeline 13 11 14.
Our second instalment of the isotretinoin (accutane) episode!
Here we discuss the potential ramifications of going on accutane and dive into the strength of the mental health claims associated.

It feels rather like a chicken or the egg situation whereby acne causes mental health issues, making it very hard to establish cause, but you'll have to listen to hear our deeper analysis.

Remember we need to be checking our cognitive bias babes before researching.
This is especially needed when researching a topic that we feel a strong emotional connection to.
We are prone to place more value on sources that affirm what we already believe and less on those we see as incorrect, but we need to strive to come from a place of curiosity, to learn and to understand rather than to pedestal or to villainise.

Anyway stay hot science xx

For the second part of our Retinol episode, we bring you what does retinol actually do to our skin and how can we discern good and troublesome information about skincare.

We bring you the first segment of "check your cognitive bias babe" which helps break down the first few google search results when conducting your own research so you can be both informed (hot) and avoid potential fear mongering traps (even hotter)!

Remember that to conduct your own research you need the adequate skills to ensure the information you are absorbing is correct, useful and not misleading!

But I trust y'all and hopefully you trust us, to help present you with the facts and help warn you from the scary people trying to sell you things (things you probably don’t need…).

Please let us know if you enjoyed the ep and wow maybe give us a five stars to help me live my dream of never working for someone else and getting to be a hot science hermit everyday !

Being informed is so hot and so is science so stay hot xx

For the third episode of "What you don’t know might kill you" we bring you the fixation of any tiktok skin care girly: RETINOL.

The skin care product taking the world by a storm for its potent anti aging effects; we uncover in this preliminary episode (because we yapped too hard and had to split it in half) what is retinol, where does it come from, and what are we trying to fix by using it. We talk about the affects of aging on our skin and what causes it.

You'll have to tune in next week for the second half where we discuss what retinol actually does, and how to analyse different types of media that are often trying to sell us something and how you can be an informed consumer making smart (and hot) decisions about your own body and the products you use.

And if you like us please give us a lil follow here and rate us five stars so I can tell my mum I'm going to make it as a podcaster.

A little bonus instalment of 'What you Don't Know Might Kill You' using all the unused research uncovered for the last episode. Since no knowledge acquired is wasted, I am making it available to clutter your brain space as well!
Loz is currently soaking up the very last of summer (?) in Fiji, so this is a solo episode to ensure our hot scientists are getting their fortnightly dose of us!
Unfortunately the sound quality this week is a little lower than normal because while Melbourne provides beautiful sites, sound proof solo work spaces are few and far between. I hope that you can endure the poorer quality as i had to while editing, and can forgive us for it.
We will be back as scheduled together next week so if you are missing Loz's input you wont have to wait too much longer!
Stay hot science xx

For the second instalment of "what you don't know might kill you", we talk all things food colourings and its mildly suspicious link to ADHD?

Is there a link, or are we just drinking someone else's (brown) cool-aid; the anti-artificial agenda trying to ruin our fun and make our children normal brained :(

Join us as we unpack the ever forgotten nuance that often helps us make the most informed choice.

The first episode of our series: What you don't know might harm you, we're talking all things that salty umami goodness MSG!
Monosodium glutamate; a well contested and well stigmatised compound is now well and truely researched, and we hope you enjoy the science!
